Where It's Working: Inside Anderson Preparatory Academy

Structure, Support, and a Sense of Purpose: Inside Anderson Preparatory Academy Anderson Prep isn't what most people picture when they hear "military academy." It's something better and worth knowing about.

You don’t make it halfway down the hallway at Anderson Preparatory Academy before a student stops to excitedly share an idea for a project with their teacher.

And as you continue the tour, it happens again….and again.

At nearly every hallway, a student or staff member pauses to introduce themselves, sharing something they’re proud of: their school, their classmates, their work, their team.

It’s not what most people expect when they picture a military academy.

But spend even a few minutes inside the building, and something becomes clear: this is a place where structure and support go hand in hand.

Located in Anderson, Indiana, Anderson Preparatory Academy serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade in a small, focused environment. Students are introduced to the school’s military structure and character-building approach early on, from learning about respect and accountability as elementary students to participating in Civil Air Patrol opportunities in middle school through high school.

During our visit, students paused in the hallway to excitedly talk through project ideas with a teacher. Staff members were dressed up for spirit week and excited to share what their classes were up to that day. Students were respectful and clearly understood expectations, but they were also welcoming, engaged, and full of personality.

That balance stood out. There is structure at Anderson Prep, but it does not come at the expense of warmth. Instead, it seems to create an environment where students know what is expected of them and know they are supported as they grow.

APA’s partnership with Civil Air Patrol is one of the school’s most distinctive features. Although the weather kept students from taking a scheduled flight the day we visited, it was easy to see how meaningful those experiences can be. We heard stories about graduates who went on to serve in the military and become pilots, inspired in part by the opportunities they found at APA.

Just as powerful were the stories about graduates who chose a different path. Not every Anderson Prep student goes on to military service, but many carry the school’s lessons with them into careers and communities as teachers, healthcare workers, business owners, and more. The discipline, leadership, and character they develop at APA stay with them long after graduation.

What makes the school especially memorable, though, is its people.

The staff member who led our tour put it best when speaking to students: “I’m tough, but it’s because I care about you. If you need something, you come to me. If you mess up, I’ll tell you that you messed up, but I’ll be on your team while we fix it.”

That kind of honesty and care says a lot about the culture at Anderson Prep. It is a place where adults hold students to high standards and walk alongside them every step of the way.

There are also some impressive spaces inside the building, including a fully outfitted makerspace with 3D printers and a state-of-the-art gym that students and staff can access. But what stands out even more than the equipment is what those spaces represent.

Every part of the building reflects the school’s mission to develop problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders.

Walk through the halls and you’ll see it everywhere. Photos of Civil Air Patrol experiences line the walls, a reminder of the real-world opportunities students step into here. Flags represent the colleges graduates have gone on to attend. Nearby, photos of alumni in military uniforms capture the paths some students choose after graduation.

It tells a story, not just about where students have been, but where they’re going.

There is a clear sense of purpose throughout the building and a strong understanding of who this school is designed to serve. Anderson Preparatory Academy offers students and families a learning environment with structure, opportunity, and room to grow.

From its focus on leadership and character to its partnership with Civil Air Patrol, APA offers an experience that simply wouldn’t exist in many traditional settings.

What stands out about APA is not just its distinctive model but the way that model comes to life in the daily experience of students. There is structure here, but there is also joy, trust, and a clear sense of possibility. It is a strong example of what public charter schools can make possible when schools have the freedom to design around a clear mission and the needs of the students they serve. For families looking for a school with purpose, challenge, and care, Anderson Preparatory Academy offers something truly special.
